Common treatments for dandruff in cats

Cats have more in common with humans than you might think. Not only do they share an unhealthy obsession with laser pointers, but they can also suffer from dandruff. If you prefer snowflakes to fall from the sky, rather than from your pet, you've come to the right place. Here we tell you everything you need to know about dandruff in cats, what causes it and how to treat it.

What is dandruff in cats?

Just like in humans, dandruff in cats is simply oily skin flakes that fall off the body. Don't worry, cats can get dandruff quite often. It's also not life-threatening, but anyone who has had dandruff knows that an itchy scalp isn't much fun. At least your cat doesn't have to suffer from the stigma many people feel when they have visible dandruff. However, it can still be as uncomfortable for them as it is for you. It's also worth remembering that dandruff can be a sign of more serious problems that may need to be checked out.

Depending on the color of your cat's fur, it can be easy or difficult to spot the characteristic dandruff flakes. If your cat has dark fur, you can check your cat's sleeping area. If your cat has dark fur and a dark-colored sleeping area, maybe you shouldn't force your cat into a goth phase? No, but jokes aside, you'll have to look more carefully.

Don't confuse dandruff with dander. Dander is much smaller, naturally shed skin particles. They are usually so small that you may not even be able to see them. These are what most often cause the allergic reactions that people can have to cats, so if you have friends or family members who are allergic, you can reassure them if it's dandruff at least. Then they may still react to any dander - too bad for them.

What causes dandruff in cats?

One of the main causes of dandruff in cats is parasites. Bites from fleas, lice, and mites can cause allergic reactions in your cat's skin, resulting in skin flakes. Another cause can be your cat's diet. An unbalanced diet can result in several different problems, one of which is dandruff. Even a dry climate can cause dermatitis.

Other causes include:

  • Allergies
  • Sunburn
  • Anxiety
  • Age
  • Infections

You need to find out the cause of your cat's dandruff to be able to treat it correctly. Alternatively, you can try some of the different dandruff treatments below and see what works.

Treatments for dandruff in cats

Shampoo

This treatment feels quite obvious. Just like for humans, a good shampoo can help moisturize the affected skin and help counteract signs of dandruff. Animgos Skin & Coat Shampoo does the job. Its all-natural formula is gentle on the skin and helps clean and protect the fur. Cats usually don't like bathing as we do, but a dip now and then along with shampoo can really make a difference in the fight against dandruff.

Parasiticides

If parasites are a problem, you need to invest in a treatment. You can prevent parasites before they affect your pet with Tick repellent in powder form. It is developed from scratch to prevent ticks, fleas, and other annoying critters from settling in your pet's skin, and can completely prevent them from becoming a problem to begin with. If your pet has already been affected by parasites, you can try Animigos Flea & Tick Shampoo to eradicate them.

Supplements

If you're worried that your cat's diet isn't providing enough nutrients, you can try supplementing their regular diet with supplements. Flaxseed oil has been shown to be beneficial in several areas, including coat and skin. It is rich in omega-3 and packed with vitamins and minerals that are essential for all cats and it can help keep their skin in shape so they don't suffer from dandruff.

Humidifier

Since a warm and dry climate can lead to dandruff, you can try raising the humidity a bit. A humidifier helps your cat's skin absorb more water, which can counteract dryness and subsequent dandruff.

Hydrate

Dehydration can also lead to dry skin and the onset of dandruff. Make sure your cat always has access to clean and fresh water. Refill their water bowl regularly and keep an eye on them to make sure they're drinking. If they're not drinking, there could be a serious, underlying reason stopping them. If that's the case, you should visit the vet immediately.

Shade

Since sunburn can cause dandruff in cats, access to a little more shade can be a perfect solution! If your cat has thin fur, or a lighter color, they have less natural protection against UV rays. Bring them indoors when the sun is at its highest during sunny days, or keep them indoors entirely during really hot and sunny periods to avoid skin damage.

Now that you know everything about dandruff in cats, what causes it, and what can be done about it, you can try it yourself and hopefully keep your cat dandruff-free! But if the dandruff persists, you should take your cat to the vet and see what they recommend.
